LINk in Action

The Lambeth LINk Steering Committee and Task Groups with the support of the Host Team are constantly working to ensure local residents and organisations get their voice heard on issues surrounding health and social care in the borough.

Below are documents which range from feedback from public meetings, training notes and Steering Committee Meeting presentations. This page will constantly be updated so please ensure you visit it regularly.

Lambeth LINk Steering Committee Elections 2012/2013

Now is the time to get your voice heard over the major changes taking place in how your local health and social care services will be provided in the future.

Under the Government’s Health and Social Care Bill, Primary Care Trusts such as NHS Lambeth are to be abolished in April 2013 and replaced with a consortia of GP’s who will be responsible for the commissioning (buying in) of your local health services.

Lambeth Council has found £10million pounds worth of savings from its Adult and Community Services budget in 2012/2013. These savings will have a knock on effect on the quality and provision of social care services Lambeth residents receive.

That is why it is important as ever to get involved in the work of your Lambeth Local Involvement Network (LINk).

Services for Older People with Mental Health problems in Lambeth: Report from the Mental Health Services for Older People Task and Finish Group

The 87 page Lambeth LINk report tackled the issues around providing health and social care services that fit the needs of the different groups of older people with mental health problems.

The task group wrote the report with the aim of highlighting gaps and recommending the actions needed to improve the services and outcomes for older people with mental health problems and their carers in Lambeth. They listened to real life experiences of Carers "fighting" to obtain services for their loved ones, which included waiting two years for social services to install a bath and a son teaching himself how to care for his mother because he has never been given the support.

The report concludes with six recommendations to Lambeth Council, South London and Maudsley Hospital (SLaM) and NHS Lambeth, which include Carers having greater access to training and information and ensuring that there is adequate overall joined-up provision for all older people with mental health problems.

Residential Care Homes for Older People in Lambeth: Report of the Lambeth LINk's Safeguarding Adults and Task and Finish Group

Lambeth residents having to navigate their way around the confusing health and social care system maze and the lack of access to translation and interpretation services for BME elders in care homes and hospitals, are two of the seven findings highlighted in a Lambeth LINk report on residential care homes for older people in the borough.

Lambeth LINk's Safeguarding Adults Task and Finish Group were given the task of understanding and examining the system of residential care homes for people of age 65 and over with particular focus on the assessment, monitoring and inspection processes that work to safeguard the interests of older people living in residential care in Lambeth.

The 69 page report concludes with a list of nine recommendations, with eight of them aimed at Lambeth Council. These include the Council immediately providing public information that clearly explains the care assessment process for those with higher needs that lead to residential care and ensuring its commissioning policy leads to a wider choice of care homes that meet the needs of the growing number of individuals from BME backgrounds.

However, Lambeth Council has not formally responded to the list of recommendations. This is despite repeated requests by the LINk which has the authority to request information and expect a reply within 20 days.
